Dr.Radha Bhaskar is a rare combination of a vocal musician, musicologist, journalist and cultural organizer.

Musician –

Dr. Radha is a senior disciple of Padma Bhooshan P.S.Narayanaswamy and has performed many concerts all over India. Important sabhas where Dr.Radha has performed include Krishna Gana sabha, The Music Academy, Karthik Fine Arts, Brahma Gana Sabha, Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, Narada Gana Sabha, Mylapore Fine arts, Bharat Kalachar, Saraswathi, Asthika Samajam etc.

She has, received several awards like Yuva Kala Bharathi, Sangeetha Sudhamayi, Sangeetha Kalasevak, Ganamrutha Rathna, best vocalist award from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Indian Fine Arts Society etc. Radha has given programmes  in all leading television channels like Sun TV, Jaya TV, Jaya Plus, Podhigai, Vijay TV, Kalaignar TV, Raj TV etc.

Congregational Singing by children -

Dr.Radha had the rare privilege of conducting a spectacular group singing programme by 5,000 school children from about 100 schools in October 2004 at the University Centenary auditorium, Chennai in the presence of the former President of India, His Excellency Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. She also received a special grant from the Ministry of Culture to conduct a mass group singing under theme “National Integration through music.”

Musicologist –

Radha holds a doctorate degree in music for her thesis- “Karnatic Music Concerts – an analytical study.” She was the recipient of the prestigious Junior Research Fellowship from UGC for five years to pursue her research.

Dr.Radha has organized many one day seminars on contemporary subjects in music. She has given many lecture demonstrations and also participated in several prestigious panel discussions all over India.

Dr.Radha has been sharing her music knowledge and experience by conducting special Music Appreciation Programmes to enlighten rasikas about the nuances of Indian Classical music. So far, about 2500 people have attended this course. Now, Dr.Radha is conducting a 12 months music appreciation programme, in association with various prominent sabhas in Chennai.  This programme has envisaged great response and appreciation from all music lovers.

Music Critic and Editor -

Dr.Radha had also been a music critic for Indian Express for several years (under the pen name Bharani) and contributed several analytical reviews and articles. She had the privilege of writing the main article in the Malayalam Manorama Yearbook on the subject – “The contribution of the Tamils to the growth of classical music.” She has also interviewed many artists for All India Radio and herself presented several special programmes on music. One notable work has been the documentation of the life and contribution  of the legend Smt.D.K.Pattammal for an archive project of All India Radio, Chennai.

Radha is presently the Editor of the prestigious art magazine Samudhra (a magazine for music, dance, drama), which has carved a niche for itself in the fine arts field. This magazine with its noteworthy articles and interviews of eminent personalities in the art field has won wide acclaim.

Cultural Organiser -

Dr.Radha has over fifteen years of experience as an organizer and administrator. She is the Treasurer of the unique cultural organization Mudhra, noted for its novel and purposeful programmes. Mudhra has achieved many milestones through its innovative and fresh approach to fine arts. It has not only conducted programmes of music and dance but also devised many unique concepts to encompass more people into the fold of fine arts and help them appreciate the arts better. These include workshops in music for rasiaks as well as students, teaching music to Corporation School children, conducting music quiz in schools, seminars and panel discussions etc. Many eminent artists have participated in these sessions and expressed wide appreciation for these concepts.

Radha is also the Director for Mudhra’s “Music Appreciation Programme” which has successfully completed many music workshops for school children and music lovers in and outside Chennai.

Academic Honours -

Dr.Radha has the rare honour of being selected as a Member of the Board of Studies of Indian Music by the University of Madras.She is also at Annamalai University, Chidambaram. Recently, Radha has been awarded a fellowship by the Ministry of Culture for a research project on music.

She is an Executive Committee Member of the Old Students Association of the prestigious Queen Mary’s College, Chennai of which she is an alumnus.
